## When Do You Need New Radiators?

Radiators are a crucial part of your central heating system, yet they are often overlooked during upgrades. If your radiators are over 15 years old, they may be corroded internally, undersized for your rooms, or operating with outdated valves that waste energy and reduce comfort.

You need new radiators when rooms do not reach a comfortable temperature despite the boiler running correctly, when radiators have cold spots that persist after bleeding and powerflushing, when you are adding radiators to new rooms (extensions, loft conversions, conservatories), or when you want to upgrade to modern designer or vertical radiators for aesthetic reasons.

We supply and fit all types of radiators — standard panel convectors, vertical designer models, traditional column radiators, heated towel rails, and low-surface-temperature (LST) radiators for nurseries and care settings. Every radiator is sized using heat loss calculations to ensure it delivers enough output for the room.

Radiator installation also includes fitting new thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) for individual room temperature control, and re-balancing your system so every radiator receives the correct flow rate. This ensures even heating throughout your home and prevents energy waste.

## Why Incorrectly Sized Radiators Cost You Money

An undersized radiator cannot heat a room to a comfortable temperature, no matter how high you turn the thermostat. The boiler runs longer, uses more gas, and the room still feels cold. This is a common problem in extended homes where builders install the cheapest radiator available without calculating the actual heat requirement.

Oversized radiators are equally wasteful. A radiator that is too large for the room cycles the TRV constantly, creates temperature swings, and uses more energy than necessary. Correct sizing means matching the radiator's BTU output to the room's calculated heat loss — accounting for room size, window area, insulation level, and exposure.

Old radiators with internal corrosion and sludge buildup act as thermal bottlenecks. They restrict water flow, reduce heat output, and force the boiler to work harder. Even after a powerflush, severely corroded radiators may not recover full performance and should be replaced.

Many homeowners also have radiators with outdated manual valves instead of TRVs. Without thermostatic control, every radiator runs at full output regardless of the room temperature — wasting energy in rooms that are already warm. TRVs are inexpensive to fit and deliver immediate energy savings.

Our Process

## How It Works

1

### Room Assessment

We measure your room dimensions, window sizes, insulation type, and exposure to calculate the precise BTU requirement for each space.

2

### Radiator Selection

We recommend the correct radiator type, size, and output for each room. You choose the style and finish to match your interior.

3

### Fixed-Price Quote

You receive a clear, written quote covering supply, installation, valves, pipework, and any system modifications needed.

4

### Installation

We remove old radiators, install the new units, fit TRVs, connect pipework, and fill and pressurise the system.

5

### Balancing & Testing

We balance the entire system so every radiator receives the correct flow rate, then test each one to confirm full, even heat output.

Benefits

## Why This Matters

### Correct BTU Output

Every radiator is sized using heat loss calculations — so each room reaches the right temperature without wasting energy.

### Lower Energy Bills

Correctly sized radiators with TRVs reduce your gas consumption by heating rooms to the right temperature — not above it.

### All Types Available

Panel, column, vertical, designer, towel rails, LST — we fit every type and style to match your home.

### Full System Balancing

We do not just fit a radiator — we balance your entire system so heat is distributed evenly across every room.

### Fast Installation

Simple radiator replacements are completed same-day. Multiple radiator installations typically take 1–2 days.

### Clean, Tidy Work

We protect your floors and furniture, and leave the work area spotless when the job is done.

## Radiator Types and Technical Considerations

Panel convector radiators (Type 11, Type 21, Type 22) are the most common choice for domestic properties. They combine flat panels with convector fins to maximise heat output. Type 22 (double panel, double convector) offers the highest output per unit length and is ideal for larger rooms. Type 11 (single panel, single convector) is suitable for smaller spaces like hallways and cloakrooms.

Vertical radiators are popular in rooms where wall space is limited. Available in heights from 1200mm to 1800mm, they fit into narrow wall sections between windows, beside doorways, or in hallways. They come in flat panel, tube, and designer styles and can serve as a visual feature while providing effective heating.

Traditional column radiators replicate the look of cast iron radiators in lightweight steel. Available in 2-column, 3-column, and 4-column configurations, they suit period properties and traditional interiors. We supply them in white, anthracite, and custom colours.

Heated towel rails are essential in bathrooms. We fit both straight and curved ladder-style rails in chrome, white, and anthracite finishes. Dual-fuel options with an electric element allow you to use the towel rail during summer when the central heating is off.

Low-surface-temperature (LST) radiators have a casing that prevents surface temperatures exceeding 43°C. They are required in nurseries, care homes, and properties where vulnerable people may come into contact with hot surfaces. We supply and fit LST radiators that meet NHS Estates guidance.

Radiator valves have a significant impact on energy efficiency. We fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on every radiator except the one in the room with the main thermostat. TRVs sense the air temperature and adjust the flow automatically — so rooms do not overheat and energy is not wasted. We also fit decorative and angled valves for a clean finish.

FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new radiator cost to fit in Barry?

A standard panel radiator supply and fit starts from around £200–£350 including TRVs. Designer and vertical radiators cost more depending on the model. We provide a fixed price covering everything.

How long does it take to fit a radiator?

A single radiator replacement takes 1–2 hours. Adding a new radiator to a room without an existing connection takes 3–4 hours. Multiple installations are typically completed in a day.

Do I need to drain the system to replace a radiator?

Not always. If you have isolating valves on the existing radiator, we can swap it without draining. If valves are not present, a partial system drain may be needed — which we handle as part of the installation.

Can you add a radiator to my extension?

Yes. We run new pipework from your existing system to the extension, fit a correctly sized radiator, and re-balance the system. We check your boiler capacity to ensure it can handle the additional load.

What size radiator do I need?

Radiator size depends on room dimensions, insulation, window area, and exposure. We carry out heat loss calculations for every room to determine the exact BTU requirement and recommend the correct radiator.

Should I replace all my radiators at once?

Not necessarily. If some radiators are still performing well and are correctly sized, replacing only the underperforming ones is more cost-effective. We will advise after assessing your system.

What are TRVs and do I need them?

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) automatically control the temperature in each room. Building regulations require them on most radiators in new installations. They reduce energy waste by preventing rooms from overheating.

Can you move a radiator to a different wall?

Yes. We relocate radiators by extending or re-routing the pipework. This is common during room renovations or when furniture layouts change.

Do you fit designer radiators?

Yes. We fit all designer, vertical, and column radiators. We can work with models you purchase yourself or supply from our trade accounts at competitive prices.

What areas do you cover?

We cover Barry, Cardiff, Penarth, Bridgend, Cowbridge, Pontypridd, and all areas across the Vale of Glamorgan.
